The 4 Key Elements of Successful Policing Strategy

A Strategic Framework for Impact

While the everyday challenges facing law enforcement continue to evolve, the tried-and-true tenets of effective law enforcement are driving success for police everywhere. Whether adapting to and embracing changing technologies, addressing community needs, or even analyzing crime patterns, law enforcement agencies are using these “4 Ps of Policing” to increase community engagement, public safety, and societal impact.

Real-Time Crime Centers are center stage when it comes to strategic policing. Watch our on-demand, ask me anything webinar: Advanced Analytics and Real-Time Crime Centers for expert insight on how you can get started.

Policing Strategy 1: Prepare Efficiently

Efficient policing starts with effective preparation: Ensuring your police force is equipped with the proper technologies and intelligence for end-to-end investigation and situation management is crucial.

Advanced analytics, for one, are helping law enforcement at every level to rapidly identify incidents that require closer examination or monitoring, investigate post-event, and proactively make impactful decisions that increase public safety. As an example, the ability to visualize the geographical location of local video surveillance cameras where video evidence is extracted empowers video investigators to holistically integrate video intelligence into an investigation. By leveraging camera coordinates, investigators can seamlessly focus their efforts on specific locations and more rapidly pinpoint people, events and objects of interest.

Policing Strategy 2: Prevent Proactively

Prepared agencies are empowered with the critical intelligence, contingency planning, and process management to proactively respond to incidents of varying size and scale. Command and control personnel with comprehensive situational awareness and a response plan for different scenarios can quickly and effectively deploy the right remedies for any situation.

Even in unprecedented circumstances, a better understanding of the people, processes, and environments involved helps law enforcement respond with agility to developing situations. The ability to trigger real-time, rule-based alerts for behaviors of interest, enable police to identify activity that requires attention, analyze it effectively, and accelerate responses proactively and, ultimately, preventatively.

Policing Strategy 3: Protecting Effectively

Community trust in law enforcement is built on a solid foundation of demonstrated partnership, proven effectiveness, and continued collaboration. Where law enforcement continues to communicate transparently, invite community input, and prevent the proliferation of crime, constituent confidence in local police is strong and supportive.

Earning that trust is dependent on delivering results: By prioritizing investment in technologies and tactics that measurably make law enforcement more effective, police leadership can demonstrate that success and strategically bolster community policing efforts.

Policing Strategy 4: Pursue Productively

While it’s rewarding to demonstrate success, achieving results worthy of sharing starts with empowering the right people with the right technology and intelligence in the right moment. Investing in optimized infrastructure lends speed and precision to investigations, increases incident awareness across broad areas, and extracts insights for better case management and decision-making.

Many local governments empower productive policing through extensive video surveillance networks enhanced with advanced analytics. Today’s smart cities are driven by data and video – paired with the technology to effectively analyze and apply the content as insights – is increasingly becoming a critical driver for better decision making for both law enforcement and other government agencies. Empowered to share information and infrastructure cross-functionally, police, communities, and governments are collaboratively effecting meaningful change through digital transformation.
